Safety Check

It's very important that you regularly give your bike a once over and make sure everything is functioning correctly.

Step: 1

Top Pivot Bolt

Check the top pivot bolt and both jockey wheel bolts are tight. Change the cable if it is frayed, and spray TF2 into the outer cable.

Step: 2

Brake Blocks

Inspect the brake blocks for wear. See they line up with the wheel rim. Fit the brake blocks so that the front edge touches the rim first to avoid brake squeal. Check the pivot bolts are tight and spray lightly with TF2.

Step: 3

Handlebars

Test the bar end and lever mounting bolts for tightness. Lubricate all the pivots and inside the gear changers with TF2.

Step: 4

Brake Caliper

Be extra careful checking that the brake caliper and disc are both firmly bolted into place. Look for leaks and worn pads as well.

Step: 5

Cranks

Cranks are held on with either ordinary bolts or socket head bolts. Both types should be tightened to the manufacturers recommended torque settings.

Step: 6

Tighten Up

The bolts holding the handlebars, stem and saddle should be tightened to your manufacturers recommended torque settings.

Why are there so many different types of puncture repair kits?

Inner tube widths and pressures vary. On high pressure inner tubes the narrow profile repair kit would be more appropriate than an 'Airtite' kit, for example. Also, some of the kits have tools included and become more or less complete roadside repair kits.

When should you use a torque wrench?

You need to use a torque wrench when you tighten most bolts & nuts in your bike. The relevant torque settings should be available from your bike manufacturer.

What are the advantage of nylon tyre levers over steel?

Cyclo nylon tyre levers have glass fibre in them so they are very strong. They are lighter than steel and don't damage the wheel rims even if they are alloy.
